The Eastern Regional Station (ERS) of ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Kolkata and Bharat Sevashram Sangha (BSS), Khurigacchi, Sonarpur jointly organized a ‘Goat Promotional Programme’ among the rural women at Dihi village on 19th of December, 2023.
Dihi village is a large village under Sonarpur block of South 24 Paraganas District. The scheduled caste SC) community (n=2040) constitutes 89.04 per cent of the total population (n=2291) of the village as per the population census, 2011. Twenty one scheduled caste women from the Dihi village participated in the programme. Dr. G. K. Das, ERS-IVRI and Sri Sujit Mondal, Bharat Sewashram Sangha coordinated the events. In the beginning, Dr Das told about the premier institute ICAR-IVRI, the objectives of DAPSC Scheme and purpose of the programme under the head of DAPSC activity. He also explained the criteria of selection of the village and what to achieve from the beneficiaries through this programme. Besides, importance of scientific rearing of goats, the ways how the vaccination and use of anthelmintic in proper time as well as knowledge on goat reproduction can help to improve the income from goat farming is also discussed. Sri Sujit told about the scopes of women empowerment through scientific goat farming and other animal husbandry practices. All the beneficiaries received awareness kits comprising printed literature on goat farming, diseases and reproduction, steel bowls and feeding plates along with medicine kits containing multivitamins, feed supplements (mineral mixtures, liver extracts), appetizers, galactagogue, and medicines like anthelmintic, anti-diarrhoeal preparations.
