In a bid to wean away farmers from stubble burning, on 04.10.2023 the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has developed and recommended a new “Surface Seeding-cum-Mulching” technology which is operated using 45 horse power tractor and can sow wheat on 1.5 acres within an hour.

Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, has called upon the farmers to adopt this technology as per which paddy residue can be managed effectively and wheat sowing can be done @ Rs 700-800/- per acre. Besides, it results in good crop (wheat) stand with no-lodging, tolerates harsh weather conditions, saves one or two irrigations and curtails herbicide application, he added.

Highlighting the advantages of the technology adoption, Dr AS Dhatt, Director of Research, assured of lesser weed menace, more yield and saving of water.

During the recent tours conducted by PAU VC and senior officials, farmers of Punjab who had tried this technology in their fields were quite optimistic and called for popularizing it across Punjab to tackle crop residue blaze which has posed a serious health hazards for the masses, animals and the soil.
