The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Ropar, under the guidance of the Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, and ICAR-ATARI, Zone-1, commemorated World Soil Day on 5.12.2023 in the villages of Jhandian (Nurpur Bedi block) and Mahlan (Block Ropar). Dr Satbir Singh, Deputy Director (Training) of KVK Ropar, guided the celebrations to raise awareness and inspire farmers to safeguard the soil.

Dr Sanjeev Ahuja, Associate Professor (Horticulture), enlightened participants on the significance of this global event and emphasized the community’s pivotal role in preserving this vital natural resource. Dr Aparna, Associate Professor (Livestock Production), highlighted this year’s theme, ‘Soil and Water, a source of life,’ echoing the global focus on nurturing healthy ecosystems for human well-being.

Ms Ankurdeep Preety, Assistant Professor (Agroforestry), advocated for tree planting to prevent soil erosion and protect the environment.

Dr Urvi Sharma, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), delved into integrated pest management in Rabi crops, urging farmers to eschew excessive use of chemicals and embrace organic manures to preserve soil health and biodiversity. Practical demonstrations of soil sampling techniques were provided to the farmers, fostering hands-on learning.

Dr Princy, Assistant Professor (Home Science), thanked the farmers for their active engagement in the event. The celebration culminated with a call to action, urging continued efforts toward soil conservation and sustainable agricultural practices for a healthier ecosystem.
