ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa organized  20th march 2024 an exposure visit to the Ornamental Fish Culture Unit at Sawantwadi, Maharashtra, today, under the NABARD-funded project ‘Entrepreneurship Development and Livelihood Improvement through Demonstration and Training of Sustainable Ornamental Fish Culture in Goa’. The programme aimed to gain insights into developing an Ornamental Fish breeding unit through direct interaction with entrepreneurs.

Shri. Trivesh Mayekar, Principal Investigator & Scientist (Fish Genetics and Breeding) ICAR Old Goa, briefed the purpose of the exposure visit.

Shri. Rajesh Salgaonkar, a successful Ornamental Fish Entrepreneur, shared his experiences and challenges in establishing an Ornamental Fish unit, explaining the basic requirements for ornamental fish farming and small-scale start-ups that can be set up in members’ backyards.

Mr. Rajesh Salgaonkar led an informative session on Ornamental Fish culture, focusing on water quality management, disease identification, medication usage, feeding strategies, breeding methodologies, marketing strategies, and packing techniques. The session emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy aquatic environment, addressing health concerns effectively, and promoting successful reproduction and population growth. It also provided insights into effective marketing strategies and meticulous packing techniques for the safe transportation of ornamental fish.

Members visited an ornamental hatchery facility, where they learned about the process of producing disease-free ornamental fish. The facility showcased various species like Guppy, Molly, Koi carp, and Goldfish, highlighting the care required for successful breeding and maintenance.

A total of 10 members from four Self-Help Groups participated in the exposure visit.
