The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Fatehgarh Sahib, organized a village level camp on “Paddy Residue Management” at village Panchen on October 11 under the leadership of Dr Vipan Kumar Rampal, Associate Director (Training). About 100 farmers from village Panchen participated in the camp.

In the camp, Dr Vipan Kumar Rampal emphasized on efficient management of crop residues to protect the environment for agriculture. He advised to adopt recommended technologies for paddy straw management which include various machines like Happy Seeder, Smart Seeder, Surface Seeder, mulcher, baler etc. He also informed the farmers about various precautionary measures, to be taken while cultivating the wheat crop planted with Happy Seeder. Besides, he dwelt upon management measures to avoid the attack of Armyworm and Pink Stem Borer in wheat.

Dr Ajay Kumar, Assistant Professor (Soil Science), lamented the loss of nutrients in the soil after burning of paddy straw and also highlighted the importance of soil testing.

Dr Arvind Preet Kaur, Assistant Professor (Horticulture), sensitized the farmers on the efficient utilization of paddy straw in cultivation of fruits, vegetables and button mushroom cultivation.

Dr GPS Sethi, Assistant Professor (Animal Science), gave detailed information on how to modify paddy straw to use it as animal feed. Mrs Pawandeep Kaur Sarpanch, Mrs Inderjeet Kaur (Nambardar), S. Kulwinder Singh, S. Gurpreet Singh, S. Shinder Singh and other dignitaries of the village also participated in this camp. Finally, the scientists answered farmers’ queries and also distributed important publications on crop residue management and machinery.
