ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Kausalyaganga, Bhubaneswar, Odisha established and inaugurated one aquarium unit at Brooder Fish Farm, Dimapur, Govt of Nagaland on 13 May 2023 to popularize the culture and keeping of indigenous ornamental fishes having high attraction and economic value in both domestic and export market. The aquarium unit is created to harbour 42 beautiful indigenous ornamental fish species from 16 districts of Nagaland through which all stakeholders including students, researchers, hobbyists, breeders and traders would be benefitted. The unit will serve as a center for conservation, propagation and popularization of keeping indigenous ornamental fishes. The event was attended by more than 70 participants including scientists, extension officials, business people, traders and progressive farmers. The aquarium unit was inaugurated by Dr Pramoda Kumar Sahoo, Director of ICARCIFA and Shri Rongsennungba, Director of Fisheries, Nagaland. They highlighted the need for such public aquariums for bringing mass awareness on the importance of indigenous ornamental fishes of Nagaland for their propagation and conservation.
Further, Dr Sahoo also emphasized the maintenance of this aquarium, the rearing of these valued creatures of nature and how to bring more newer species into this system which may lead to conservation this biodiversity. Shri Rongsennungba expressed profuse thanks to ICAR-CIFA for establishing the aquarium unit in the state of Nagaland that was a long-felt need of the people of the region. Further, Dr Saroj Kumar Swain, Principal Scientist of ICAR-CIFA described the methods of breeding and culture of indigenous ornamental fishes. During the programme, Shri. Ketusielie Angami, Joint Director narrated the diverse range of endemic ornamental fishes in Nagaland and Shri Vimezo Kire, Deputy Director Fisheries highlighted the genesis of establishment of the Aquarium unit. The event was coordinated by Dr P P Chakrabarty & Dr C K Misra, Principal Scientist of ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar.
