Punjab Agricultural University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Hoshiarpur orchestrated a field day to explore modern wheat cultivation techniques utilizing the Smart Seeder technology. The event took place in village Dhada Kalan, block Garhshankar, district Hoshiarpur, on March 13, 2024.

The event was led by progressive farmer S Taranjit Singh Mann, under the guidance of KVK scientists, who has successfully implemented wheat sowing using the PAU Smart Seeder on 18 acres of land.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training) at KVK Hoshiarpur, emphasized the need to abandon burning crop residue for environmental preservation. He highlighted the adverse effects of this practice and urged farmers to champion the non-burning of paddy residue. Dr Bons advocated for cost-effective techniques, particularly emphasizing in-situ paddy residue management, essential for timely wheat sowing, and provided insights into pest management strategies in residue-managed fields.

KVK experts delivered technical lectures during the event. Dr Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), explained the meticulous functionality of the PAU Smart Seeder in placing wheat seeds and covering them with soil, operating efficiently with tractors of 45 to 50 horsepower. Dr Parminder Singh, Associate Professor (Animal Science), stressed the importance of dairy animal management and balanced ration formulation. At the same time, Dr Karamvir Singh Garcha, Assistant Professor in Vegetable Science, highlighted the role of integrated nutrition gardening.

The event saw the participation of several progressive farmers from Dhada Kalan and Bugra villages, including S Harjinder Singh, S Mohinder Singh, S Sukhjinder Singh, S Manpreet Singh, S Parminder Singh, S Kulwant Singh, and S Manmohan Singh Khalsa.

In conclusion, S Taranjit Singh Mann extended gratitude to fellow farmers, esteemed experts, and the attentive audience for their active involvement throughout the program.
