The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur under the guidance of Directorate of Extension Education , Punjab Agricultural University conducted a five days vocational training programme on “Mushroom Cultivation as Subsidiary Occupation ” from 21 to 25 August , 2023 in which 20 farmers from different villages of district Sangrur and Malerkotla attended.

On the very first day , Dr. Mandeep Singh Associate Director (Training) extended a warm welcome to the participants and shared the importance and economics of mushroom cultivation as a subsidary occupation in agriculture. He also briefed them about various other vocational training courses being conducted by this Kendra and persuaded them to adopt subsidiary occupations in order to generate additional income and employment for their families.

Dr. Ravinder Kaur, Assistant Professor (Horticulture) acted as coordinator of this training programme and deliberated on nutritional and medicinal use of mushrooms in our diet. She discussed different types of mushrooms and its proper care and management during cultivation. Practical demonstrations on different steps of mushroom cultivation like composting, spawning and casing were conducted during the training program.

Dr. Jaspreet Kaur, Mycologist (Mushroom), PAU, Ludhaiana discussed about compost methodology and crop management practices . She also shared valuable information on disease and insect management in mushroom cultivation.

The participants were informed regarding subsidy and credit schemes by Dr. Prahalad , HDO from Horticulture department. The progressive mushroom grower S. Jaspal Singh shared his success story and practical experiences with the trainees. Literature on mushroom cultivation was distributed to the trainees. The trainees also visited progressive mushroom grower’s farm at Vill. Dugal where they directly get exposure to AC Mushroom production Unit, Kacha shed preparation and held fruitful interaction with the grower. some practical problems with grower .
