Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Bahowal, Hoshiarpur, the district-level extension agency of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, organized a demonstration on the use of the “Happy Seeder” for wheat sowing at the farm of progressive farmer Sh Jasbir Singh in village Feroze Raulian, block Tanda, on November 8, 2023, as part of an ongoing campaign on paddy residue management.

Sh Jasbir Singh Judge, Lambardar of the village and a prominent advocate of resource conservation technologies has been utilizing the Happy Seeder for direct wheat sowing for the past five years. He employs a Super SMS attached combine harvester for paddy harvesting and uses a rain gun for irrigating the wheat fields, attesting to a 66% reduction in irrigation water usage. Recognized for his active role in promoting the non-burning of paddy straw, Sh Jasbir Singh has received accolades from the district administration, KVK, and the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.

Dr Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur, highlighted the success of paddy residue management in the adopted village, emphasizing the widespread adoption of baling technology due to active support from the district administration.

During the demonstration, Dr Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), explained the environmentally friendly features of the Happy Seeder technology vis a vis its role in improving soil health, reducing weed growth, and facilitating timely wheat sowing. Dr Singh also underscored the cost-effectiveness and simplicity of the technique for in-situ paddy residue management, allowing for single-operation wheat sowing compared to the multiple operations required in conventional methods.
