Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Hoshiarpur, operating under the umbrella of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, organized an informative village-level awareness camp on the responsible management of paddy residue on September 27, 2023, in the adopted village of Nadalon, within the Mahilpur block. Many local farmers and farm women enthusiastically participated in the camp.

Dr Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur, warmly welcomed the attendees and provided insights into the various initiatives undertaken by KVK Hoshiarpur for the betterment of the farming community. He highlighted the KVK’s ongoing campaign to educate and mobilize farmers in managing paddy residue responsibly through awareness camps, training sessions, demonstrations, engagement with school and college students, wall paintings, and distribution of informative literature. He also underscored the harmful consequences of crop residue burning and urged farmers to champion the noble cause of not burning paddy residue. Dr Bons also highlighted improved cultivation practices for rabi crops, including wheat, gram, lentil, and gobhi sarson.

Dr Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering) at KVK Hoshiarpur, offered detailed insights into the challenges and their solutions to managing paddy residue machinery. He discussed machinery options such as Super SMS, Smart Seeder, Surface Seeder, Super Seeder, Happy Seeder, mold board plough, zero-till drill, and the baling of paddy residue in fields. Dr Ajaib also informed the audience about government subsidies for paddy residue management machinery and stressed the importance of custom hiring and cooperative efforts to make the most of these machines.

Dr Parminder Singh, an expert from KVK Hoshiarpur and Associate Professor (Animal Science), addressed farmers on the nutrient composition of paddy straw. He also discussed the utilization of paddy straw for mushroom cultivation, energy generation, biogas production, fodder, and seasonal management of dairy animals.

During the event, seeds for rabi crops, including gobhi sarson, berseem, onion, pulse, and oilseed kits, as well as fodder kits, winter vegetable seed kits, mineral mixtures, uroxin licks, and literature from Punjab Agricultural University were made available to benefit the attending farmers.

The occasion was graced by Sarpanch, Sh. Achharjit Singh of Nadalon village and several panches and progressive farmers engaged in meaningful discussions with experts regarding paddy residue management and the cultivation of various crops.
