KVK, Mansa successfully conducted a five days vocational training programme on “Nursery raising in Horticultural crops” from 21.08.2023-25.08.2023 under the aegis of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. The training programme was organized under the able guidance of Dr. Gurdeep Singh, Deputy Director (Trg.), KVK Mansa in which 25 candidates including both farmer/ farm women actively took participation from the different villages of districts Mansa and Bathinda.

During the training programme, Dr. BS Sekhon, Assistant Professor (Vegetable Science) delivered lectures regarding importance and scope of nursery raising in horticultural crops. Further he elaborated both theoretically and practically about selection of site, quality seed, seed treatment, preparation of nursery beds, seed rate, germination percentage, number of plants required per acre, use of pro-trays & soil-less media and pest and disease management in nursery raising of vegetable crops.

Dr. Manveer Kaur Bath, Dr. Yogesh Khokhar and Dr. Kirandeep Kaur Kang from the Department of Fruit Science, PAU Ludhiana delivered online lectures on “Water and Soil management in Fruit crops”, “Basics about fruit nursery raising” and “Propagation of Fruit crops for nursery raising”, respectively.

Dr. Simrat Singh from Department of Floriculture delivered online lecture on “Nursery raising in Floricultural crops” and sensitized the farmers to visit the nurseries of public sector and progressive farmers for more exploration.

Dr. Vipesh Garg, HDO, Mansa shared useful information regarding schemes of Horticultural department.

Dr. Navjot Gupta and Dr. Chetak Bishnoi imparted theoretical and practical training regarding important rootstocks available and their characteristics, timing and stage of harvesting of seeds of fruit crops, preparation and timing of setting up mother block for both rootstock and scion and different methods of propagation like grafting, cutting etc. during the exposure visit of trainees at RRS, Bathinda. Farmers took keen interest throughout the training programme and their queries were attended wholeheartedly by experts.

During closing ceremony, Dr BS Sekhon thanked all the participants and motivated them to adopt nursery raising as subsidiary occupation for additional income.
