Water is a precious resource which needs to be conserved.Rainwater harvesting is the technique through which rainwater is harvested/captured from the natural/artificial catchments and is stored in any suitable structure for further use. Tanka is underground cistern for collection and storage of harvested rainwater. The capacity of tanka depends on rainfall and catchment characteristics. Improved tanka is superior to traditional tanka in terms of life span, maintenance, quality of water and economics.

The improved tanka design developed by ICAR-CAZRI has got wide acceptance in the arid region. The designs have been replicated in large numbers by different developmental agencies.
