In a proactive initiative to mark World Diabetes Day on 15.11.2023, the Department of Food and Nutrition organized a comprehensive camp at PAU Health Centre, focusing on diabetes awareness, nutritional education and health assessment.

The Dean, College of Community Science, Dr Kiran Bains, while appreciating the efforts of the students, emphasized on the rising prevalence of diabetes and the need for creating awareness regarding the risk factors and screening of diabetes for early detection and management.

Giving details, Dr Jaswinder Kaur Brar, Professor, Department of Food and Nutrition, said that nutrition education regarding diabetes will yield positive impact on the community to reduce the risk of diabetes.

The camp was organized under the supervision of Dr Renuka Aggarwal, Scientist of the Department, who highlighted the importance of HbA1c test for early detection and timely management of the disease.

The Chief Medical Officers of the PAU Health Centre Dr DS Pooni, Dr Kamalpreet Kaur and Dr Jaspreet Kaur also visited the camp and interacted with the students and visitors, and shared their views and knowledge. The students of Master’s program of the department arranged an exhibition on theme “Know the risk, Know the response” and presented information very proficiently with the mix of creative handmade charts and prints. The camp emphasized on the importance of functional foods and Glycemic index of foods in management of diabetes. The body composition of all the visitors was assessed and diet counseling sessions were also conducted. All the queries related to diet in diabetes were addressed and misconceptions were busted leaving the visitors with crystal clear concepts.
