Punjab Agricultural University’s Field Advisory Service Centre (FASC), Faridkot, organized a Field Day on Surface Seeder sown wheat on March 4, 2024, at village Jhakharwala, under the guidance of the Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana. A total of 216 farmers participated in the programme, keen to explore the potential of this innovative technology.

Dr Fatehjeet Singh, DES Agronomy, warmly welcomed all participants, setting the stage for an informative and engaging event.

Dr R K Singh, Professor of Agricultural Engineering, provided valuable insights into the surface seeder machine and operational precautions. Queries from farmers were addressed, alongside discussions on various crop residue management technologies.

Dr Pawitar Singh, Assistant Professor (Soil Science), emphasized the importance of biofertilizers and soil and water testing in optimizing crop productivity. Dr. K S Matharu, Assistant Professor (Entomology), shared expert views on disease and pest management in wheat and mustard crops.

Dr Gurdarshan Singh, Professor of Horticulture, shared practical tips on cultivating summer vegetables, enriching the knowledge base of the attending farmers.

Dr Fatehjeet Singh elaborated on good agronomic practices essential for successfully implementing surface seeder technology. He addressed farmer queries regarding weed management in wheat crops and advised adopting short-duration rice cultivars post-wheat harvesting, discouraging maize fodder cultivation for silage purposes.

A highlight of the programme was a field visit to S Mahavir Singh’s farm, showcasing 11 acres of successfully sown wheat using the surface seeder. Farmers S Angrej Singh and S Labh Singh, from the same village, shared their positive experiences with the technology, advocating for its adoption among fellow farmers.

Dr Fatehjeet Singh concluded the event with a vote of thanks to scientists and farmers, highlighting the collaborative spirit driving agricultural innovation and progress.
