Palampur 3 November. A national seminar on Role of Standardization in Agriculture Ecosystem was organised at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today.

In his inaugural address, Chief Guest Dr D.K.Vatsa, Vice Chancellor said that nobody can survive without agriculture as food is required for all. Farming should be done with high quality and for it, standards are required right from producing food to processing it. He said that all concerned should have proper knowledge about standards in agriculture. One has to work hard to maintain and improve standards .

He told that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has developed Indian Standards of different products and consumables for the clients and general masses. It is important to make clients aware about the ISI marked farm machinery, implements, drip irrigation systems, fertilizers, pesticides, processed food, packing and storage, green houses, etc.

The Vice Chancellor said that ISI marked products are trustworthy, durable and useful for agri-entrepreneurs. He discussed standards for several day to day use items, products etc and expressed concern that consumers and general masses are not much aware about such standards. There is a need to create mass awareness about it.

Dr D.K.Vatsa also discussed natural disasters and underlined the need of developing and strictly following standards for roads, infrastructure , vehicles, etc to make safety our priority. He said all should endeavor to control environment pollution, save nature, follow rules and regulations for the welfare of coming generations. The Vice Chancellor said that time has come to use renewal energy and electric vehicles. He appreciated the Bureau of Indian Standards for joining hands with the Department of Agricultural Engineering of host University for organizing the seminar.

Mr.Debasish Mahalik, Scientist, Bureau of Indian Standards spoke about Standardization in the food and agriculture sector. He also detailed Indian Standards on agricultural systems and management.

Prof Manjeet Singh from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana; Dr Surendra Singh, Technical Advisor, Agriculture Machinery Manufacturers Association, Mr Chandreshekhar Deshmukh, Manager, John Deere, Mr Pradeep Kumar and Er Arshdeep Singh also expressed their views on various aspects of quality and standards

Dr Sushant Bhardwaj and Dr Kanika Baghla informed that around 100 engineers, scientists and officers from various Engineering colleges, ITIs, institutes and some progressive farmers and students participated in the seminar.
