In a proactive effort to tackle the issue of crop residue burning, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kapurthala, under the guidance of the Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana, and ICAR-ATARI, Zone-I organized a competition involving village school students. The event was held at Government High School, Khassan, on November 3, 2023, and featured slogan writing, essay writing, and poster-making competitions.

Master Jaswinder Singh, on behalf of the school, extended a warm welcome to the KVK experts and commended their dedicated efforts in promoting paddy straw management. Dr Harinder Singh, Associate Director (Training) at KVK, Kapurthala, engaged with the students, shedding light on the harmful effects of crop residue burning and educating them about various technologies for its responsible management. Distinguished philanthropist Dr NS Kang also graced the event and urged the students to help spread the message further.

The competitions were organized under the guidance of Mrs Avneet Kaur Ahuja, Associate Professor (Home Science), to inspire students to participate actively and become ambassadors for this important cause.

The competition winners were as follows:

Ravinderjit Kaur from class 10 secured the first prize.

Suman from class 10 and Khushboo from class 9 were awarded the second and third prizes, respectively.

Additionally, the winners received PAU souvenirs to recognize their competitive spirit. The students also pledged to spread awareness about responsible paddy straw management in their villages.

Mr Tarsem Singh Sandhu, the school’s principal, thanked the KVK team for organizing the competition and assured them of full cooperation in this noble cause.
