Fast spreading through its seeds, parthenium is poisonous and aggressive weed posing serious threat to human beings and livestock. To generate mass awareness on its ill-effects and management, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Faridkot organized a week-long campaign from August 16-22, 2023. The campaign was organized under the umbrella of the Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University and ICAR-ATARI Zone 1, Ludhiana during which a series programmes were organized in different villages, Virewala Khurd, Jalaleana, Machaki Khurd, Aryianwala, Tehna, Nathewala, Faridkot, and KVK campus.

Dr GS Makkar, Deputy Director (Trg), KVK Faridkot shared that parthenium commonly named as Gajar Ghaa or congress grass is not only fast spreading (single plant can produce 15000 to 25000 seeds) but may cause dermal and naso-bronchial diseases. The present campaign focused at community involvement in managing this menace, Dr Makkar added.

Dr. Pawitar Singh (Asstt. Prof., Soil Science) shed light on the harmful effects of parthenium and its management through uprooting, release of Zygogramma bicolorata, broadcasting seed of competitive plants and through weedicides. He also shared information regarding the integrated nutrient management in paddy and basmati rice.

Dr. Rakesh Kumar (Prof., Agri Engg.) shared information regarding paddy straw management through crop residue machinery. He also apprised farmers about the CRM machinery available with the KVK.

Dr. Gurlal Singh (Asstt. Prof., Animal Science) shared important tips regarding tick management in animals, mastitis management, importance of mineral mixture and balanced ration. Free literature on parthenium management was also distributed during the campaign.
