A training programme on “Hands on training programme on molecular techniques for fish and shrimp diseases” was conducted at aquatic animal health and environment division of ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai under the referral laboratory component of National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD) – Phase II project during 24th July to 4th August 2023. Project staff from the NSPAAD-Phase II centers of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat participated in this training programme where they were provided with hands on training on Level I, II and III disease diagnostic protocols. The program consisted of both theory and practical classes where three eminent external experts and eleven internal faculties were involved.

This training was inaugurated on 24th July where Dr. A. G. Ponniah, former director of CIBA was the chief guest and highlighted on the importance of the NSPAAD project.  Dr. S. Kandhan from MPEDA was the guest of honour who spoke on the importance of disease diagnostic methods, particularly with respect to Aquatic Quarantine Facility (AQF) of Govt of India. Presiding over this function, Dr. Kuldeep K Lal, Director CIBA provided information regarding origin of NSPAAD, its significant output and its continuation during this second phase. During the valedictory program on 4th August, Dr. Indrani Karunasagar from NITTE University, Mangalore mentioned about accuracy and uniformity of diagnostic procedures and justified conducting the training programme. Certificates were distributed to the participants during the valedictory programme.
