The Farm Advisory Service Centre and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur jointly organized a farewell function to bid adieu to Dr. Buta Singh Romana, Senior Extension Scientist-cum-DES (Senior Most) who has served at the Farm Advisory Service Centre, Sangrur and other organizations for more than 32 years. The function was held at the FASC Sangrur office which was attended by around 70 guests, including family members, colleagues, friends, and farmers.

The event started with a speech by Dr. Mandeep Singh, Associate Director (Trg.) who highlighted the life time achievements and career progression of Dr. Buta Singh Romana. He appreciated him for his wholehearted and dedicated services for the welfare of farming community throughout his career. Dr. Romana’s illustrious deputation period with different organizations such as M/S Pepsi Foods Ltd. (1995-2001), Punjab State Farmer’s Commission, Mohali (2007-2016) and Punjab State Seed Corporation, Mohali (2022-2023) during which he worked extensively on contract farming, protected cultivation of vegetables and quality seed production was brought in limelight by him. He shared that Dr. Romana has always worked in farmer participatory mode and with a mission to reach the unreached villages and farmers. Dr. Romana had conducted extensive monitoring and surveillance of vegetable and field crops and trained a large number of farmers for hybrid seed production, vegetable nursery production, adoption of low tunnel technology and trellis system in vegetable cultivation. He is a treasure trove of numerous practical and useful feedbacks from farmers’ fields for research investigation and recommendation.

S. Mohinder Singh Sidhu, Chairman, Punjab State Seed Corporation (Punseed), Mohali shared his life time experiences while working with Dr. Buta Singh Romana during his farming period and said that Dr. Romana has worked tirelessly for upbringing of farmers especially small holders by guiding and helping them for crop diversification especially for vegetable crops. He lauded his work for the flood affected farmers by growing and distributing paddy and basmati nursery.

Dr. Gurmeet Singh Buttar, Director Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana also graced the occasion and said that it’ll be very hard to fill the void created by the retirement of Dr. Buta Singh Romana. He praised the commendable work done by him in niche area of vegetables of Malerkotla. He advocated that all extension scientists should learn from Dr. Romana that how to win the favor of farmers and the way of collaborating with them for implementation of various recommended agricultural practices.

Many farmers including S. Nishan Singh, S. Bachittar Singh Garcha, S. Harwinder Singh, S. Beant Singh, Sh. Vasdev Sharma and Sh. Bal Krishan also shared their work experiences with Dr. Romana and thanked him for the wholehearted support at crucial times of COVID, floods, pest attack, etc.

By the end, Dr. Buta Singh Romana expressed his gratitude to everyone who has come to attend the function and thanked them for their support throughout his career. He advised young faculty to work with full dedication towards wellbeing of the farmers. He said that he was looking forward to spend more time with his family and will help the farming community in every possible manner even after his retirement.

The Special Guests and whole staff members of FASC and KVK Sangrur honored Dr. Romana in recognition of his extensive services to the department. Farmers also honored Dr. Romana for his selfless service.
