ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi celebrated World Intellectual Property Day virtually on 26th April 2023. The programme was organized by Institute Technology Management Unit under the chairmanship of Dr. GP Singh, Director, ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi with the theme, “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”. The programme was attended by a total of 71 active participants from Headquarter and Regional Stations including Scientific and Technical staff, and Post Graduate students of PGR.Dr. Kanika Malik, Senior Principal Scientist, National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research was the resource person and delivered an enlightening talk on “Copyrights © and Plagiarism”. She covered various aspects of copyright, its origin, terms and guidelines, the process to apply, the application fee, and various conditions of copyright infringement and plagiarism. She also discussed how to protect the author’s rights and the remedies available for copyright violations. The difference between plagiarism and copyright infringement was also explained. The talk was followed by an interactive session. Dr. Shiv Datt, Principal Scientist, IP&TM Unit, ICAR, New Delhi graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. He appreciated the ITMU, ICAR-NBPGR efforts for conducting this awareness programme on World IP Day. He also appreciated the speaker Dr. Kanika Malik for delivering such an informative talk. He apprised about IPR portfolio (plant varieties, patent, copyright, trademark etc.) of ICAR after the implementation of IPR guidelines wherein he also emphasized that the filing of IP for protection including plant varieties under PPV&FRA needs to be encouraged in ICAR. He pointed out that awareness and capacity building on IPR issues should be a regular activity of ITMUs. The Chairman and Director, ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi, Dr. GP Singh highlighted the importance of celebrating WIP Day. He believed such awareness programmes are necessary to encourage innovation and creativity among the scientific fraternity. Discussing the theme of WIP 2023, he said that this day also celebrates the “Can do” attitude of women inventors. He opined that women play a critical role in science and technology, and emphasized the need of strengthening their participation. The programme ended with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Sandeep Kumar, Incharge ITMU, ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi.
