At the monthly review meeting for extension and research work, deliberations centered around sowing of wheat, paddy straw management, off season management of cotton sticks, yield prospects of cotton, and seed sale of PAU wheat varieties.
Chairing the meet, Dr GPS Sodhi, Director of Extension Education, exhorted the extension scientists to strengthen their in-field and off-field connect with the farmers via personal interaction, and timely management of their (farmers’) agriculture related issues and problems. He advocated the no-burning of wheat straw in the coming harvesting season and warned that action if not taken in time, could result in hazardous consequences.
Dr AS Dhatt, Director of Research, underscored the need for promoting short duration paddy varieties in view of limited resources available with regard to excessive use of water and fertilizers. In the wake of ban on Pusa 44 by the Punjab government in the next Kharif season, scientists should make unceasing efforts to promote PAU developed non-water intensive ‘PR’ varieties which have received unprecedented response from the Punjab farmers during the last few years, he stressed.
Dr TS Riar, Additional Director Communication, welcomed the senior officials, heads of various departments, and research and extension scientists from Regional Research Stations, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Farm Advisory Service Centre’s and PAU. Later, he proposed a vote of thanks.
