A training programme on ‘Geospatial Analysis Using Open-Source Software’ was organized by the Fisheries Economics, Extension and Statistics (FEES) Division of ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai, from 4th to 9th September 2023 under the guidance of Dr. Ravishankar C.N., Director, ICAR-CIFE Mumbai and Dr. N.P. Sahu, Joint Director, A total of 25 participants (9 males and 16 females) participated in this training programme.

Three participants were from Patna University, 2 each from ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow, College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri, Dr Y.S. Parmar University College of Horticulture and Forestry, Thunag, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, 1 each from Annamalai University, West Bengal University of Animal and Fisheries Science, Dr. Y.S. Parmar University College of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, College of Fisheries, Nagpur, College of Fisheries, Gujarat and 9 from ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai.

The training programme consisted of 6 lectures and 5 practical sessions. The topics included in the training programme were, ‘Introduction to Geospatial Technology and its Applications; Spatial Analysis and Image Processing; Machine Learning technique and its Application; Mapping and Monitoring Mangroves; Retrieval of environmental parameters using the Google Earth Platform (GEE platform); LULC (supervised classification through machine learning technique on GEE platform)’. In addition, recorded lecture videos were shared for better understanding and knowledge retrieval. Participants also presented brief concept notes related to their area of interest in geospatial field.

Pre-training and post-training assessments of the participants were recorded to assess the effectiveness of the training programme with reference to the knowledge level of the trainees. The results showed improvement in the knowledge of the participants.

The valedictory function of the programme was conducted on 9th September and the certificates were distributed by Dr. Ravishankar C.N, Director, ICAR-CIFE. He highlighted the utility of this training programme in the present digital era stressing the need for more similar programmes.

A manual of the training programme was released virtually by Ravishankar C.N, Director, ICAR-CIFE and Dr. Arpita Sharma, HOD, Fisheries Economics, Extension and Statistics (FEES) Division.

The training programme was conducted by Course Director Dr. Vinod Kumar Yadav and Course coordinators Dr Vidya Shree Bharti and Dr. Arpita Sharma.
