ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai participated actively in the first National Kisan Credit Card (KCC) Conference organized by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying held in Mumbai on 4/9/23 at Yashwantrao Chavan Centre, Marine Lines, Mumbai. This conference explored the effective outcome, possibilities and challenges faced regarding KCC in the sector. Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (FAHD) Shri. Parshottam Rupala inaugurated the first National Kisan Credit Card Conference organized by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. He graced the occasion and enlightened the audience with his pro-active thoughts and inspiring words and urged the banks to keep minimum checklist to approve loans through KCC to fishers, fish farmers and include women fish vendors who are very important for the fisheries sector. Dr. L. Murugan, Hon’ble Minister of State of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, GoI urged that KCC needs to penetrate further in rural areas. He highlighted the concerns faced by fishers and farmers specially in availing credit. He stressed that KCC is able to strengthen the rural economic system so its penetration in rural areas is important. For this, it is necessary that bankers should make an enabling environment.

The Minister of State for Finance Dr. Bhagwat Kishanrao Karad stressed that KCC should be given to fisheries sector applicants on priority and the same should be expedited. Shri. Sudhir Mungantiwar, State Minister of Forests, Cultural Affairs and Fisheries, Govt. of Maharashtra urged that KCC is a boon for fishers, fish farmers and should be extended to fish vendors also. He announced silver pomfret as the state fish of Maharashtra. Silver pomfret is the preferred seafood of most of Maharashtra’s coastal population and with this announcement, the fishing community and other stakeholders were happy. He mentioned in his address that this decision will help conserve and increase the production of silver pomfret in Maharashtra.

Many other dignitaries like Shri. Radhakrishna Eknathrao Vikhe Patil, Minister for Revenue, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, Govt. of Maharashtra and Shri. Ram Naik, Former Governor, Uttar Pradesh were present in this national conference.

The dignitaries also included Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Government of India, Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, IAS, Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, Shri. Pankaj Kumar, IAS, Managing Director, Maharashtra Fishery Development Corporation, Ms. Alka Upadhyaya IAS, Secretary, DAHD, GoI, Ms. Varsha Joshi IAS, Additional Secretary, DAHD, GoI, Shri. Tukaram Mundhe IAS, Secretary (AD), Agri and ADF Department, Maharashtra, Shri. Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary (Inland Fisheries & Administration), DoF, GoI, Dr. L. Narasimha Murthy; Executive Director, Reserve Bank of India, Shri. Neeraj Nigam and CGM, Dept of Refinance, NABARD, Shri. Vivek Sinha amongst others. Team ICAR-CIFE comprising of scientists Dr. Debajit Sarma, HoD, Aquaculture Division, Dr. Arpita Sharma, HoD, FEES Division, Dr. Naresh S. Nagpure, Principal Scientist, FGB Division, Dr. Shashi Bhushan, Scientist, FRHPHM Division, Dr. Kiran Rasal, Scientist, FGB Division, Dr. Kapil Sukhdhane, Scientist, Aquaculture Division and Dr. Madhuri Pathak, Scientist, Aquaculture Division participated and actively
contributed in this national conference.

A number of fish farmers, fishers and fish vendors participated and presented their views in this conference. Additionally, many participants joined through virtual modes, from various states/UTs. Publicity materials of KCC were distributed in seven languages along with video on KCC facility.
