In a bid to advocate non-burning of paddy residue and popularize paddy straw management techniques to avoid environmental degradation, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur conducted a village level awareness camp on different techniques of paddy residue management in the adopted village Ibrahimpur of block Tanda of district Hoshiarpur on October 10.

At the outset, Dr Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur, welcomed the farmers and gave a brief overview of the activities of KVK, especially, the project on crop residue management. He laid stress on the proper management of paddy residue through the efficient use of farm machinery and shared various technological options for crop residue management. Dr Bons also informed that KVK was conducting awareness camps for the effective management of paddy residue at farmers’ fields. Besides, he shared important tips for improved crop cultivation and plant protection practices for rabi crops.

Dr Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), highlighted the harmful effects of crop residue burning and informed the farmers about the benefits of adopting paddy residue management techniques. He discussed different nutrients available in paddy residue and need for their preservation. He also sensitized the farmers regarding the use of paddy straw in biogas plants, use as fuel and energy, use in mushroom cultivation and as fodder.

In this camp, Sh Harpreet Singh, Agriculture Development Officer, Hoshiarpur and Sh Lovejit Singh, Agriculture Development Officer, Tanda were also present and shared information regarding various farmer welfare schemes of the department and wheat seed subsidy policy.

For the benefit of the farmers, seed of various rabi crops (gobhi sarsonberseem and onion), vegetable seed kits, fodder seed kits, mineral mixture, uromin licks and wheat cultures were arranged and PAU literature was distributed.

Sh Amrik Singh, Sarpanch of the village, proposed a vote of thanks and assured all support for carrying out various extension activities to curb the practice of crop residue burning.
