Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Fatehgarh Sahib, led by Dr Vipan Kumar Rampal, Associate Director (Training), took a significant step toward sustainable agriculture by organizing a “Block Level Camp” on Paddy Residue Management in the village of Pola on October 10, 2023, and witnessed active participation from approximately 100 farmers from the region.

During the camp, Dr Vipan Kumar Rampal underscored the importance of efficient crop residue management in preserving the agricultural environment. He urged farmers to adopt recommended technologies for managing paddy straw effectively. Dr Rampal provided comprehensive insights into machines such as the happy seeder, smart seeder, surface seeder, mulcher, and baler, emphasizing their role in sustainable paddy straw management. Additionally, he advised farmers on precautions to take while cultivating wheat using the Happy Seeder technique and shared strategies to prevent Armyworm and Pink Stem Borer infestations in wheat crops.

Dr Ajay Kumar, Assistant Professor (Soil Science), shed light on the loss of soil nutrients from paddy straw burning and emphasized the significance of soil testing as a crucial step in maintaining soil health and fertility.

Dr GPS Sethi, Assistant Professor (Animal Science), provided valuable insights into how paddy straw can be modified and utilized as nutritious animal feed, presenting an eco-friendly approach to resource management.

The camp featured guest speakers, progressive farmers Gursewak Singh and S Baljinder Singh Bahlolpur, who shared their practical experiences and success stories regarding surface seeding of wheat with fellow farmers. Dignitaries from the village, including Nirmal Singh Panch, Darbara Singh (ex-member of the society), Kuldeep Singh (ex-secretary), Gurpreet Singh (in-charge of the society), and other respected individuals, actively participated in this enlightening event.

In conclusion, the scientists addressed farmers’ inquiries, provided valuable guidance, and distributed informative publications on crop residue management techniques and machinery.
