ICAR-Central Institute for Cotton Research (CICR), organized “Pre-Kharif Kisan Sammelan” for awareness of technologies and best practices for enhancing cotton productivity” under Development Action Plan for Scheduled cast (DAPSC) on 19 th May, 2023 at ICAR-CICR campus, Nagpur. Dr. C.D. Mayee, Former Chairman ASRB, New Delhi graced the event as Chief Guest.

In inaugural address, he reiterated that the farmers should take the benefits from this Scheme (DAPSC) implemented by ICAR-CICR in terms of critical inputs in cotton production at different stages of the crop for enhancing productivity of Cotton. He also suggested the farmers to take the technical guidance for doubling the income from the Scientists of various discipline available at CICR. Dr. Y. G. Prasad, Director, ICAR-CICR briefed on different outreach activities of Institute consisting of the production and protection strategies to enhance cotton productivity in Maharashtra.

The scalable technologies ICAR-CICR has improvised include High Density Planting System for rainfed marginal soils to enhance cotton yield and climate resilience, canopy and nutrient management for rationalizing fertilizer, legume-based intercropping for improving soil health, IPM/IRM strategy for pest and disease management.

Dr. Jayant Meshram, Nodal Officer DAPSC presented an overview of activities conducted under Development Action Plan for Scheduled Caste (DAPSC). Five progressive cotton farmers were felicitated by providing kits containing Battery operated Knapsack sprayer, vegetable seeds kit, pest management kit, soluble fertilizers and printed leaflets at the hands of Dr. C.D. Mayee required for adoption of best practices in the ensuing cropping season.

More than 200 farmers from Durgada village of Wardha district and Mendhepathar Tahsil Katol, Hingna Tahsil Savner, Piperdol of Tahsil Umred and Aamti of Tahsil Kuhi from Nagpur district participated and inputs were distributed to these farmers. Farmers were also showcased with latest cotton technologies developed at ICAR-CICR through an exhibition. A technical session was also conducted for farmers which included interactive lectures on Weather-based crop management advisory, Selection of cotton cultivars having high boll retention and good yield potential under rainfed and irrigated conditions, Pre-sowing operations, soil health management, and nutrition management during the initial growth stage, Pest and Disease management strategies during pre-sowing and the initial growth stage of cotton crop and Scientists – Farmers interactions. The workshop concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Babasaheb Fand, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CICR, Nagpur.
