The Training and Education Centre, ICAR-IVRI, Pune, in collaboration with Krantisinh Nana Patil College of Veterinary Science (KNPCVS), Shirwal, Satara (Maharashtra), successfully organised a 3-day training programme on “Lameness Management in Dairy Cattle” from 28th to 30th of January 2025. The training was aimed at sensitizing and equipping veterinary practitioners with essential knowledge and practical skills for diagnosing, preventing and managing lameness in dairy cattle. Sixteen veterinary officers from the field, 11 from the state of Maharashtra and 5 from the state of Gujarat participated in the training. Several PG students from KNPCVS also actively participated in the training programme.
The training programme was inaugurated on 28th January in the presence of Chief Guest Dr HP Aithal, Principal Scientist & Station In-charge, TEC Pune. Dr Aithal briefed about the activities of the Centre and highlighted the importance of lameness management in dairy animals and its significant impact on the Indian economy. Dr MD Meshram, Associate Dean, KNPCVS, encouraged participants to actively engage in the training and emphasized the need to focus on management practices and nutritional aspects, which are the primary causes of lameness in dairy animals. The Course Director Dr VM Salunke, Professor, KNPCVS, provided an overview of the training programme, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in enhancing veterinary expertise. Dr SK Das, Principal Scientist and Dr Sanghratna V Bahire Scientist from TEC Pune and the faculty and students from KNPCVS were also present. The inaugural session was efficiently compered by Dr Satyawan Agivale, who also extended the vote of thanks to the dignitaries and participants.
The training programme was meticulously structured, combining theoretical lectures, practical demonstrations, and field visits. On the first day, Dr Shilpa Modekar, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy, KNPCVS, delivered an insightful session on the anatomical structure of bovine foot and its significance in the development of lameness. Dr Navdeep Singh, Professor and Head, Department of Surgery and Radiology, GADVASU, Ludhiana, explained the primary causes of lameness and its treatment in bovines. Dr Sameer Jadhav, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, KNPCVS, provided a detailed understanding of biomechanics, animal gait posture, and its physiological consequences. Dr Sanghratna V Bahire, Scientist, TEC Pune, elaborated on the prevalence, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of lameness.
The day’s session concluded with a discussion on neurological disorders associated with lameness by Dr Satyawan Agivale, Asst. Professor, who also highlighted the diagnostic aspects.
On the second day, experts delved deeper into specific lameness conditions. The training session focused on pain assessment and management strategies. Dr VM Salunke, Professor of Surgery, explained methods for evaluating pain associated with lameness and discussed various treatment options. Dr HP Aithal discussed upper limb fractures related to lameness and their surgical management. The day concluded with a field visit and a demonstration of hoof trimming techniques, guided by Dr HP Aithal, Dr VM Salunke, Dr Shalaka A Chauhan and Dr Satyawan Agivale. A practical session on hoof trimming was conducted by Mr Nalband, providing handson training to the participants.
On the final day, Dr Shalaka Chauhan provided an overview of common lameness issues related to digits and hoof, including interdigital fibroma and infectious claw diseases. Dr NM Dinesh, Senior Veterinary Surgeon from Kunigal Stud Farm (Karnataka), delivered an online session on equine laminitis and canker, covering treatment and management aspects. Dr Manjunath SP, Senior Veterinary Officer from Department of Animal Husbandry, Karnataka, provided a field veterinarian’s perspective on identifying and managing different causes of lameness in large ruminants. The session also included discussions on joint affections related to lameness, followed by a practical demonstration on shoeing techniques by Dr VM Salunke, Dr Satyawan Agivale and Dr Sanghratna Bahire in the presence of Mr Mayuresh Kumar (Ferry expert).
