S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian, cabinet minister of Punjab for Agriculture and Farmers‘ Welfare, Animal Husbandry Fisheries & Dairy Development and Food Processing paid a maiden visit to Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. On this occasion Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the University said that the University is constantly striving for the betterment of livestock and farmers.


S. Khudian said that we should serve the livestock farmers selflessly and try to improve the income of small and medium farmers by providing them animals/germplasm of superior quality.


The Vice-Chancellor said that Livestock sector plays a major role in the economy of the state by contributing nearly 40 percent to the agricultural GVA of the state. He said that the university is trying to get more production by improving the breed of animals and is working to increase the profit of farmers by processing milk and livestock products.


A visit to the Demonstration Unit of College of Fisheries, different livestock farms and Multi-Specialty Veterinary Hospital was also arranged. He showed keen interest in intensive fishery farming for production of more fish per unit area while saving the water. He was enlightened about the different aquaculture systems and he applauded the contribution of the university in developing shrimp farming in zero earning salt affected waterlogged waste lands of southwest Punjab. At the dairy farm of the Varsity, superior quality dairy animals were displayed. S. Khudian praised the quality of HF cross cows which are very high milk producing animals. University also showed very good animals of murrah, nili ravi buffaloes and jersey cows breeds.


S. Khudian visited the Medicine, Surgery and Genecology units of the Small Animal Hospital. He applauded the facilities created by the university viz; Echocardiography, Critical care, Endoscopy, dialysis, interventional ultrasonography and dermatology units; different operational theatres under surgery and gynae departments and ultra-modern Clinical diagnostic laboratory. An exhibition of the services and products of the university was also held in which he showed his good interest and encouraged the colleges to make more and new products. A meeting with University officials in the presence of Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor was also held in which he appreciated the efforts being made for the betterment of the livestock occupations and asked them to formulate new policies to uplift the farming community.
