One day training programme on “Agroforestry Systems” was organized by ICFRE-Institute of Forest Biodiversity (IFB), Dulapally, Hyderabad & AICRP on Agroforestry, PJTSAU, Hyderabad on 30-04-24 at KVK, Palem, Telangana state. Scientist (Soil Science), AICRP on Agroforestry Shri E. Venkat Reddy, IFS, Director, ICFRE-IFB, Hyderabad and chief guest of the programme delivered a lecture on ‘Policy and legal issues for promotion of commercial tree cultivation of Sandalwood’ covering all legal requirements and procedures for marketing of Agroforestry/forest tree species. He encouraged the farmers to grow commercial tree species like sandalwood, casuarina, mahogany etc., in view of shortage of supply on one hand and ever increasing demand on the other hand. Dr. S. Vanisree, PS(Oilseeds) & ADR i/c, STZ, RARS, Palem suggested the ways to obtain income from tree based intercropping until the trees start yielding. Dr. S. Pattanaik, Sc-G & GCR, ICFRE-IFB, Hyderabad enlightened the participants about ‘Nursery and cultivation techniques of Sandalwood & Red sanders for agroforestry systems’ duly covering best silvi cultural practices. Dr. A.V. Ramanjaneyulu, PS(Agro.) & Head, AICRP on Agroforestry, PJTSAU, Hyderabad highlighted the importance of various agroforestry systems and gave examples of successful farmers (Soapnut, Eucalyptus, Mahogany etc.,) in agroforestry.
Dr. T. Prabhakar Reddy, PC, KVK, Palem has elucidated about various extension and seed production/processing activities of KVK, Palem. Dr. T. Chaitanya, Scientist (Soil Science), AICRP on Agroforestry, Hyderabad explained the best bet silvicultural practices for profitable production of Malabar neem and Bamboo. Dr. M. Lakshman, Horticulture Officer, Kollapur division, Nagarkurnool district briefed on ‘Quality planting material in Agroforestry’ covering importance, ways of production of good quality planting material, accreditation of nurseries and precautions to be taken while purchasing and aftermath. T. Usha Rani, DGM, PSPD, ITC ltd., Hyderabad delivered a talk on ‘Profitable production of Eucalyptus, Subabul etc.,’ including the clonal propagation techniques, various clones and their suitability, gestation period, productivity and profitability. Dr. Adi Shankar, SMS (Horticulture), KVK, Palem answered all the queries raised by the farmers regarding availability of good quality planting material, agronomic management, pest and disease problems in Mango, Oilpalm, Moringa, Soapnut, Jamun, Guava etc., Mr. Manikantha Reddy and Mr. Prasad from IFB, Hyderabad besides 62 farmers from erstwhile Mahabubnagar and Rangareddy districts participated in the training programme.
