4th May 2024, Chennai ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai released its maidan shrimp harvest from a new-age shrimp rearing system, a pilot project under PMMSY. The programme is implemented with funding support from the Department of Fisheries. By integrating various proven technologies into a single production system, this approach promises a paradigm shift in shrimp farming with high-density biosecurity, climate resilience, efficient feed, and resource utilization, and minimal environmental conflicts.
Dr. J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries) ICAR, Dr. Kuldeep K. Lal, Director, ICAR-CIBA, Dr. K. Ambasankar, HoD, ICAR-CIBA and Dr K.P. Kumaraguru Vasagam., PI of the project along with senior officials of CIBA, were present during the programme.
ICAR-CIBA implemented a new-age farming system, the first of its kind in the country, which produced 1.57 tons of shrimp from a 500 cubic meter circular tank. Key features include circular self-cleaning ponds, feeding automation, intelligent aeration systems, in-situ natural feed production, minimal water exchange, and energy consumption, stringent biosecurity measures, and reduced manpower requirements. Although some systems are still in development, these systems indicate a strong promise for the future of shrimp aquaculture in India.
