The Himalaya embraces 14 states in India including Himachal Pradesh. The mixed farming includes crop-livestock-horticulture system in this hill state. Small millets, maize, rice, wheat, amaranths, rajmash, barley, apple, peach, pear, plum, potato, pea,cabbage, cauliflower, french bean and tomato form major components of the farming systems. The cash crops are also picking up. The undulated topography, rugged terrain, unfavorable cold climate, lack of suitable crop varieties, inadequate production and marketing infrastructure are some of the major constraints in farming, making it a non-viable proposition.To address to all such needs, to resolve the farm related issues and problems of the State and to raise the socioeconomic status of the farming community of Himachal Pradesh.
Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (now Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya) was established in November, 1978. College of Agriculture, established in May,1966, formed the nucleus of new farm University.
The mandate of the University is : imparting education in agriculture and allied sciences, furthering advancement of learning in hill agriculture by research and undertaking extension of scientific knowledge to the farmers of Himachal
Pradesh.
