Aiming to stop farmers from torching farm fires, an awareness rally was taken out by the farmers and the Rural Awareness Work Experience (RAWE) students of the College of Horticulture and Forestry, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in the village Jangpur of district Ludhiana. The programme was a part of the training course on “Crop Residue Management and Crop Diversification.”
Pointing out the contemporary challenges of groundwater depletion and environmental pollution, Dr Jaswinder Singh Brar, Coordinator of the course, called upon the farmers to make judicious use of water by opting for alternate crops like fruit crops, and say no to straw blaze keeping in view the health worries emanating from the smoke.
Dr Amit Kaul, a PAU expert, warned the farmers against stubble burning, which has disastrous ramifications in terms of worst air pollution and soil health deterioration.
Expert Dr Ashok Kumar Dhakkad explained the importance of agro-forestry, identification of trees and their agronomic practices.
Dr Jupinder Kaur advised the farmers to go in for soil testing and make use of organic manures as well as biofertilizers which are boon for enhanced soil health.
The Incharge of the village Dr DS Talwar said that the extension mechanism of PAU was a way to fortify rural agricultural activities, rural heritage and present-day agriculture scenario. He advocated vegetable cultivation for coming out of traditional wheat-paddy cycle.
Ms Navjit Kaur and Ms Gurleen Kaur, students of B.Sc Horticulture, coordinated the programme. Present on the occasion were Dr Manveer Kaur Baath and other dignitaries.
