In a constant effort to uplift the rural community socially and financially, the Skill Development Centre of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) conducted a five-day training programme on “Winter Season Mushroom Cultivation” under the guidance of Dr MS Bhullar, Director of Extension Education. A total of 76 farmers, women and the youths participated in the training programme, organised in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology, PAU.

Dr Rupinder Kaur, Associate Director (Skill Development), said that this training was specially planned for the second batch in view of the overwhelming response to the mushroom growing.

Dr Urmila Gupta, Head, Department of Microbiology, while sharing the availability of facilities, highlighted the minimum investment with large margins being reaped through the subsidiary occupation of mushroom production.

Dr Lavleesh Garg, Extension Scientist, informed about the large-scale adoption of mushroom growing enterprise by the agricultural community and the unemployed youths for fiscal stability.

The Technical Coordinator Dr Shammi Kapoor, Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities; and Dr Shivani Sharma, Mycologist, discussed the successful cultivation of paddy straw, milky, Dhingri and Shiitake mushrooms.

Dr Jaspreet Kaur, Dr Aaina Goyal, Dr Sukhjeet Kaur, Dr Sonika Sharma, Dr Ramandeep Singh, Dr Maninder Kaur, Dr IS Sandhu and Dr NP Kalsi dwelt upon the health benefits, processing technologies, homemade food products, marketing strategies and subsidy available for the agri preneurs.

Dr Prerna Kapila, Course Coordinator, and Mrs Kuldeep Kaur, demonstrated the making of mushroom-based recipes.

Mrs Kanwaljit Kaur proposed a vote of thanks.
