Scope of the Programme

Agriculture plays a critical role in the economic development of many countries, particularly in developing regions of the world. Agricultural exports are a major source of foreign exchange earnings, and can contribute significantly to the growth and development of a country’s economy. In this context, unlocking the export potential of agricultural commodities is essential for promoting economic growth and reducing poverty. Millets are a group of small-seeded grasses that have been grown for thousands of years as a staple food crop in many parts of the world. Millets are highly nutritious and resilient to adverse weather conditions, making them an important food crop in regions prone to drought and other climate extremes. Millets have been traditionally grown by smallholder farmers in developing countries, but their potential as a commercial crop for export has not been fully realised. This program aims to unlock the export potential of millets, with a special emphasis on smallholder farmers and marginalized communities. The program ‘Unlocking Agricultural Export Potential with special emphasis on Millets has a broad scope, encompassing a range of activities aimed at improving the millet value chain and increasing millet exports.
