The ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Farming Systems Research Centre for Hill and Plateau Region (FSRCHPR), Ranchi, successfully organized a ten-day student training program on “Soil Testing and Fertilizer Recommendations” from July 16 to July 30, 2024. This program was specifically designed for B.Sc. Agriculture students from Jharkhand Rai University, Ranchi, and was attended by ten students. Dr. S. K. Naik, Principal Scientist, was the Course Director, while Dr. Reshma Shinde, Scientist, was the Course Coordinator. The training aimed to enhance the practical knowledge and skills of students, featured a mix of theoretical lectures with hands-on exercises to encourage a learning-by-doing approach. The comprehensive training curriculum covered important topics such as soil and plant sampling, the working principles of analytical instruments, the estimation of macro and micronutrients in soil and plants, fertilizers and manures, fertilizer recommendations, role of legumes, and organic and natural farming. A significant portion of the training was dedicated to practical exercises, with a strong emphasis on the analytical techniques for soil and plant nutrients. Students were trained to interpret soil test results and formulate appropriate fertilizer recommendations and reports. Additionally, the program included field visits, demonstrations of preparation method for vermicompost, Jeevamrit, and Ghanjeevamrit, grafting technique, nursery management, etc., enriching the students’ learning experience. Dr. A. K. Singh, Head of ICAR RCER FSRCHPR, Ranchi, participated in the valedictory function. In his address, he emphasized the importance of soil test-based balanced and integrated nutrient management for maintaining crop production, soil fertility, and overall soil health. He also highlighted the significance of hard work, sincerity, and punctuality for achieving success in students’ lives, wishing them bright futures and encouraging them to serve the farming community of the nation. During the valedictory function, the students were awarded certificates and expressed their satisfaction with the training. They appreciated the practical nature of the course and expressed a desire for more such hands-on training opportunities in the future.
