The Eastern Regional Station (ERS) of ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Kolkata and Pranabananda Vidya Mandir (PVM, Bharat Sewashram Sangha, BSS), Daria jointly organized a “Goat Promotional Program for Women Farmers” at Daria village under Canning-I block (South 24 Paraganas, West Bengal) on 16th April, 2024. Thirty eight (n=38) scheduled caste women from Daria, Gobramari, Gopalpur, Ronia, Sundi Pukuria and Thakurani Baria villages, under Canning-I block (having 51 per cent scheduled caste population percentage) participated in the program. All the beneficiaries are involved goat rearing. Dr. G. K. Das Principal Scientist from ICAR-IVRI-ERS, Kolkata and Sri Sujit Mondal, Secretary, Daria-PVM, BSS were present in the programme. In the beginning, all the beneficiaries enrolled their names and received the awareness cum promotional kits, comprising printed scientific literature (leaflets and handbills) describing schedule of goat vaccinations, tips of goat rearing and management, goat diseases like Goat Pox, PPR, Brucellosis, and Tuberculosis, goat reproduction, goat parasites etc., printed folder, writing pad, pen, printed caps, masks, hand sanitizer etc. Following the registration session, Dr G. K. Das briefed about the history of the premier Institute ICAR-IVRI and the objectives of DAPSC scheme. He pointed out the role of rural women especially women belonging to weaker section of the society in goat husbandry and forming rural economy. He further emphasized on scientific rearing of goats for improving profit earning, the ways how the vaccination and use of anthelmintics in proper time as well as knowledge on goat reproduction can help to improve the income from goat farming. He also discussed scopes of women empowerment through scientific goat farming and other animal husbandry practices. Sri Sujit told about the importance of goat rearing for income generation and the role of women in goat rearing. In an interactive session, beneficiaries were asked various questions on goat reproduction and made correction their existing knowledge and updated various new technologies pertaining to the goat reproduction like ultra-sonographic diagnosis of pregnancy, methods of induction and synchronization of estrus in goats, its advantages etc. At the end of the program, all the beneficiaries received steel bowls and with medicine kits containing multivitamins (Vitamin-A, D3, B1, B6, B12, C, E etc.), feed supplements (mineral mixtures, trace elements, liver extracts), appetizers, galactogogue, and medicines like sulpha bolus, anthelmintics, anti-diarrhoeal preparations, respiratory syrup, digestive tonic, heat inducers etc. along with a note on a white paper detailing the indication of each item, method and dose of administration of medicines and feed supplements after consultation with scientists of ERS, ICAR-IVRI if any part remain unclear.
