The PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kapurthala,28.05.2024 under the guidance of the Director of Extension Education at PAU, Ludhiana, is ramping up technological support for Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) in various villages, including Dham, Talwandi Mehma, Bheela, and Kothe Chet Singh in the Kapurthala block.
Dr. Mandeep Singh, Assistant Professor of Agronomy at Kapurthala, highlighted the importance of tar-wattar sowing for DSR. He recommended the use of a lucky seed drill equipped with a herbicide spray tank to allow simultaneous sowing and herbicide application, thereby saving time, water, and labor costs, while boosting the yield of the subsequent wheat crop.
Dr. Gagandeep Dhawan, Assistant Professor of Soil Science, noted that DSR techniques help reduce water usage, improve soil health, and lower cultivation costs. He emphasized the benefits of carbon credits from crop residue management, DSR, and alternate wetting and drying technologies. He also encouraged farmers to adopt integrated nutrient management, combining organic and inorganic fertilizers to enhance soil fertility.
Dr. Harinder Singh, Associate Director (Training) at Kapurthala, stressed the need for widespread adoption of direct seeded rice. He assured farmers of continued technical support from the KVK team to maximize outreach and effectiveness.
