The ICAR–CIFRI organized a one-day workshop on “Futuristic Approach for Inland Fisheries Informatics: Role of Tools and Techniques Hybridization” in December 2024 as per the vision of Dr. J. K Jena, DDG Fisheries who urged for organizing a workshop on big data platform. Addressing the critical needs of the inland fisheries sector, this was the first-ever initiative focusing on informatics for inland fisheries. The workshop highlighted the development of data systems based on environmental and biological parameters, taxonomic information, catch assessment methodologies, and generic data science pipelines.
The event was attended by 60 participants, including practicing and former researchers and scientists from agricultural universities, fisheries universities, technology institutes, C-DAC, and various ICAR institutes across the country. The session was chaired by Dr. Nabarun Bhattacharyya, Professor and Director of the School of Information and Technology at MAKAUT, West Bengal; Dr. Atul Kumar Singh, Former Director of ICAR-DCFR; and Dr. Sudhir Raizada, Former ADG, ICAR.
In his inaugural speech, Dr. B.K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, emphasized the significance of the workshop and underscored the institute’s contributions to developing big data platforms. Dr. Malay Naskar, Ms. Chayna Jana, and their team demonstrated the institute’s innovative products, including RiverAquaMap, inland native fish species analytics, and catch assessment software.
Dr. Bhattacharyya praised ICAR-CIFRI’s approach, particularly their methodology for developing a generic data science pipeline. However, he stressed the importance of addressing cybersecurity and intellectual property rights (IPR) issues related to the web applications and standalone software. Dr. Singh and Dr. Raizada also lauded the research team’s efforts and suggested incorporating additional parameters relevant to fisheries to ensure the tools remain futuristic in the evolving data science era.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by the national anthem.
