Background Information
Floriculture is a multi-billion dollar global industry, that includes the production of cut flowers, traditional flowers, bedding and garden plants, foliage plants, potted plants, cut greens, quality seed and planting materials, dry flowers and foliage, landscaping, post-harvest management and value-added products. The diverse agro-climatic conditions prevailing in India favors year round production of ornamental crops. The Indian floriculture market reached INR 231.7 billion in 2022 with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13% during 2023-2028. Flowers have been an integral part of the Indian society and are cultivated for various purposes ranging from aesthetic to social and religious purposes. Steady increase in the demand for cut and loose flowers in the global arena has made Floriculture as one of the important commercial trades in Indian Agriculture. The consumption within India is increasing with the changing socio-economic structure as well as effects of globalization. Modernization and growing western cultural influences have driven consumers to buy flowers on occasions like Valentine’s day, anniversaries, birthdays, Friendship day, Mother’s day, Father’s day and so on. Religious festivals in India is marked by enormous demand and consumption of flowers. Flowers are also used on a large scale for extraction of flavor’s and fragrances, natural colors, medicines, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical compounds. With this background, ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Hesaraghatta, Bengaluru, in collaboration with Society for Promotion of Horticulture (SPH), Bengaluru is organizing a National Conference on “Recent Trends and Future Prospects of Floriculture in India” during January 9-11, 2024.
