Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Fatehgarh Sahib hosted a transformative five-day vocational training course on beekeeping from February 12th to 16th, 2024. Nineteen rural youth, hailing from various villages in the district, participated in this programme.

Dr Vipan Kumar Rampal, the Associate Director (Training), outlined the KVK’s commitment to empowering farmers through diverse training initiatives. He underscored the pivotal role of beekeeping in agricultural economics and highlighted the potential for individuals from all walks of life to thrive in this sector.

During the course, Mrs Reet Verma, Assistant Professor specializing in Plant Protection, provided comprehensive insights into bee biology, hive management, and pest control strategies. Practical demonstrations on hive inspection, feeding regimes, and parasite management enriched the learning experience, equipping participants with essential skills for successful beekeeping ventures. Emphasizing a practical approach, Mrs Verma recommended starting with 10-15 colonies, gradually expanding as proficiency grows—a strategy tailored to the needs of novice beekeepers.

Dr Manisha Bhatia, Assistant Professor of Home Science, shared valuable knowledge on honey processing, packaging, and the regulatory requirements for obtaining FSSAI licenses—a crucial aspect of commercial honey production.

Dr Vipin Kumar Rampal elaborated on the certification benefits, revealing that participants would receive accreditation from Punjab Agriculture University, opening doors to a 40% subsidy under the National Horticulture Mission. This endorsement validates their newfound expertise and provides tangible support for their entrepreneurial endeavor’s.
