Ginning Training Centre (GTC) of ICAR-CIRCOT (Mumbai), Nagpur organised an Awareness programme on “Parthenium: Problems and Solutions” during 18th Parthenium Awareness Week (August 16 – 22, 2023) and Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav programme on August 22, 2023 at Masepatar village, Kalmeshwar Taluka, Dist – Nagpur. Mr. Shankar Khubde, President, Masepatar Panchayat graced the occasion as chief guest. Scientists and Technical staff of the institute were also present in the event. Dr. Pandiyan, K., Sr. Scientist and Officer In-Charge, GTC, Nagpur welcomed the farmers and gave the introductory remarks about the event.
At the outset, Dr. Pandiyan enlightened the farmers about the history of Parthenium invasion in the country and menaces caused to human and animals besides negatively impacting the crop productivity. Various methods for management of Parthenium weeds including composting were addressed to the farmers. Dr. Varsha Satankar, Scientist, GTC, Nagpur has briefed about the various quality parameters of cotton and stressed upon the importance to preserve the quality of fibers after harvesting. The farmers were sensitized about ill effects of burning of cotton stalks and enlightened about various value-added products produced from cotton stalks. The programme was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Varsha Satankar.
