In a significant stride towards fostering collaboration in the field of cooperative management within the fisheries and aquaculture sector, the Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE), Mumbai and the Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management (VAMNICOM), Pune signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 26, 2024.
The ceremony, held at the ICAR-CIFE campus in Mumbai, was graced by Dr. Ravishankar C. N., Director and Vice Chancellor of ICAR-CIFE, and Dr. Hema Yadav, Director, VAMNICOM. The signing event also saw the participation of scientists & faculty members from both institutions. The MoU aims to bolster the synergies between ICAR-CIFE and VAMNICOM, paving the way for enhanced fisheries cooperative management practices. Through this partnership, the institutions will collaborate on research, training, and development initiatives that are expected to significantly impact the fisheries and aquaculture sector by improving cooperative ecosystem management strategies and practices. Dr. Ravishankar C. N. expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting that the MoU represents a pivotal moment for advancing the shared goals of both institutions. “This partnership will not only strengthen our research capabilities but also extend our outreach through delivering impactful training programs. We are excited about the potential advancements in fisheries cooperative management that will emerge from this collaboration,” he stated. Dr. Hema Yadav echoed these sentiments, highlighting the mutual benefits and opportunities that the MoU brings. “By joining forces with ICAR-CIFE, we are taking a monumental step towards integrating cooperative management principles into the fisheries and aquaculture sector. This collaboration will enable us to leverage each other’s expertise and resources to drive innovation and improve practices across the board.”
Dr. N. P. Sahu, Joint Director, ICAR-CIFE highlighted the core areas for collaboration like fisheries cooperatives training need assessment, impact assessment of delivered training programs, building ecosystem for promoting student entrepreneurships, designing tailor-made training programs for fisheries department officials and unemployed youth, etc. The ceremony concluded with a shared commitment to the goals outlined in the MoU, setting the stage for a fruitful collaboration in research and consultancy on fisheries cooperatives, exchange knowledge and expertise fisheries and cooperative management, training of stakeholders and student internship and strategic alliance for development vocational/certificate courses, sandwich training programs, business incubation, etc. in fisheries cooperatives that promises the commitment towards the mantra of “Sahakar Se Samriddhi” for benefiting the fish farmers, fishing communities and beyond.
