The Eastern Regional Station of ICAR-IVRI, Kolkata organized a Follow up and Monitoring Programme on 3rd January, 2025 at Kalyani Farm (ICAR-IVRI), Kalyani, Nadia. The objectives of this one day programme was to know the present status of animals, their growth performance and constrain facing by the farmers as well as its ameliorative measures. Besides, emphasis was also given to make the farmers aware for vaccination Classical Swine Fever (CSF), Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Swine Pox in coming summer . Twenty one (n=21, 18 female and 3 male) farmers, those who have already taken one day training along with inputs under this scheme came from Banshberia, Bongaon and Chakdah, blocks. All the farmers are deeply engaged in local (indigenous) pig rearing from a long period. The program was started with introductory note by Dr. S. Naskar, Principal Scientist and Principal Investigator of All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Pig. He mentioned the purpose and goal of the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Tribe (DAPST) under the project sub-head of AICRP on Pig. Dr. Naskar also told about different management protocol to be followed for better productivity of animal. Dr. B. Mondal, Principal Scientist and well known Virologist spoke about the various emerging viral diseases of swine. He also told about the different vaccine to be given to prevent the emerging diseases like classical swine fever, Foot and Mouth Disease and Swine Pox etc. Moreover, he also informed the gathering about the highly infectious African Swine Fever Disease and it’s prevention protocol and bio-safety measures Dr. G. K. Das, Principal Scientist from ERS, ICARIVRI and Co-Principal Investigator of this project told about reproductive issues and their management measures. He also briefed the farmers about basic issues of heat detection, breeding time, care during pregnancy and post furrowing care and management.
All the beneficiaries were asked for the status of their animals, body weight achieved as on date and the mortality of piglets if any and the causes or symptoms shown prior to death. At last, a questionnaire session was kept where farmers raised different problems they are facing during rearing of animals. Scientists listen their questions and meticulously answer their queries. During the discussion, the scarcity of feed was appeared as the major problems among the farmers. Hence, an additional amount of pig feed and feed supplement were provided to all the farmers.
