Empowering the farmers and the farm women to adopt entrepreneurship to double the inflow of the money, the Skill Development Centre of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) conducted a five-day training course on the “Preservation of Fruits and Vegetables at Household Level.” A total of 56 members from rural Punjab attended the course, held under the stewardship of Dr MS Bhullar, Director of Extension Education; and designed in association with the Department of Food Science and Technology, PAU.

Dr Rupinder Kaur, Associate Director (Skill Development), said that culinary creativity was a solution to the post-harvest losses. “The technical experts gave hands-on-training in the preservation of fruits and vegetables as well as their processing to avoid wastage and large scale losses,” she added.

Extension Scientist Dr Lavleesh Garg highlighted the significance of the training course, which aimed at enhancing the skills of the trainees in the processing and making of the nutritious recipes using fruits and vegetables.

Experts Dr Arhsdeep Singh, Dr Vikas Kumar, Dr Neha Babbar and Dr Manveer Singh demonstrated the preparation of dishes using tomato and potato as well as explained the profitable marketing strategies.

Dr Hanuman Bobade and Dr Jagbir Rehal focused on the post-harvest fruit management as well as labelling and packaging techniques; and making of mixed fruit jam, guava jelly and badam ka sharbat.

Mr Karanbir Singh Gill, Business Manager, Punjab Agri Business Incubator, highlighted the success stories of the startups, trained by PAU, at the national level.

Mrs Kanwaljit Kaur proposed a vote of thanks and motivated the trainees to boost the fellow farmers and women as well to start their own ventures for economic sustainability.
