The Punjab Agricultural University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Hoshiarpur, organized a five-day training programme on paddy residue management from October 7 to 14, 2024. The training, held at village Thinda in block Mahilpur and at the KVK campus, aimed to educate farmers of the adopted village of Thinda on sustainable technologies for managing paddy residue.
Dr Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur, inaugurated the programme by welcoming the farmers and discussing the harmful effects of paddy residue burning. He emphasized the benefits of adopting non-burning techniques and assured the farmers that machinery for paddy residue management would be made available on a priority basis.
Dr. Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), provided detailed insights into the challenges and solutions related to using various paddy residue management equipment, such as Super SMS, Smart Seeder, and Super Seeder. He also highlighted the importance of custom hiring and cooperative efforts for effective machinery use. He discussed alternative uses for paddy residue, such as in biogas plants, the cardboard industry, mushroom production, and as fuel, manure, and mulch.
Progressive farmers Onkar Singh and Mewa Singh shared their experiences with paddy residue management, while PAU literature was distributed to further assist farmers in adopting these techniques. The programme concluded with a productive discussion between farmers and experts, addressing queries on paddy residue management.
