The Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, in collaboration with PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur, and the Vegetable Research Farm, Khanoura, organized a method demonstration on May 14, 2024. The event showcased the usage of a paddy straw bale shredder cum mulcher in turmeric-sown fields at the farm of award-winning progressive farmer, Sh. Amritpal Singh Randhawa, in Phuglana village, Hoshiarpur district.
Dr. Baldev Dogra, Professor in the Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, explained the machinery’s compatibility with tractors of 35 hp or above and its capacity to cover 6.0-7.0 acres per day. He highlighted the machine’s efficiency in reducing straw size and evenly spreading it as mulch across fields.
Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training) at KVK Hoshiarpur, discussed the numerous benefits of mulching in agriculture. Sh. Amritpal Singh Randhawa expressed his satisfaction with the machine’s performance and its potential application across various vegetable crops, including turmeric.
Also present at the demonstration were Dr. Navjot Singh Brar, Vegetable Breeder at Vegetable Research Farm, Khanoura, and Dr. Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor of Agricultural Engineering at KVK Hoshiarpur.
