WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 CELEBRATED AT ICAR IIHR

The ICAR–Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru, celebrated the World Environment Day on 5 June 2026 as part of the global World Environment Day campaign led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The programme commenced with a tree planting event at the Fruit Crops Nursery.  Dr. N. Ravindra Kumar, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Government of Karnataka, Bengaluru was the Chief Guest.  Dr. Prakash Patil, Director I/c and  Project Coordinator,  Dr. L. R. Varalakshmi, Head I/c, Division of Natural Resources, Dr. K. V. Ravishankar and Dr. R. H. Laxman, Principal Scientists, Dr. M. V. Dhananjaya, Nodal Officer, Farm Management Committee, along with other scientists and staff members  participated in the plantation programme.

            The World Environment Day celebration continued in the institute auditorium. Dr. L. R. Varalakshmi, Head I/c, Division of Natural Resources extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries and participants. In her address, she highlighted the significance of World Environment Day, emphasizing the responsibility of every citizen in conserving and safeguarding the environment. Two awareness videos depicting environmental disasters caused by irresponsible human activities and their adverse effects on ecosystems were screened for the audience.

            Subsequently, the Chief Guest, Dr. N. Ravindra Kumar addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of World Environment Day and the need to maintain a clean, pollution free environment. He stressed the significance of developing and preserving green belts in urban areas and underscored the importance of biodiversity conservation for sustainable development. In his presidential address, Dr. Prakash Patil highlighted the vital role of every citizen in protecting and preserving the environment for future generations. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Chethan Kumar.

The programme was coordinated by the division of Natural Resources.
