A three-day Special Training Programme on “Advanced Horticultural Practices” was organised by ICAR–Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (ICAR-IIHR), Bengaluru, from 21-23 May 2026 for farmers from Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council, Keralam (VFPCK), Kerala. The programme aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of farmers on advanced horticultural technologies, scientific crop management practices, protected cultivation, post-harvest management and emerging innovations in horticulture.
The training programme included technical sessions on advanced technologies in vegetable, fruit flower and other horticultural crops, nursery management techniques, balanced use of fertilizers, soil health management, protected cultivation, soilless cultivation of vegetable and medicinal crops, hydroponics, vertical farming, pest and disease management in horticultural crops, post-harvest technologies & value addition, improved mushroom production technologies and advanced cultivation practices in banana and ginger and farm machineries developed by ICAR-IIHR and value-added products in horticulture.
As part of the practical exposure, participants visited various demonstration units within ICAR-IIHR, including the mushroom laboratory, vegetable & fruits demonstration blocks, nurseries, Centre of Excellence on Protected Cultivation, BESST-HORT facility and ATIC. These visits enabled the farmers to gain first hand understanding of advanced production technologies, protected cultivation systems, post-harvest innovations and entrepreneurial opportunities in horticulture.
The programme also included exposure visits outside ICAR-IIHR to Sri Sai Flori Tech, Doddaballapura and Ekalavya Hi-tech Nursery. During these visits, farmers observed successful commercial models of protected cultivation, hi-tech nursery management, and modern horticultural production systems, which provided practical insights into technology adoption and enterprise development. In addition, a special session on advanced cultivation practices in ginger was organised at the University of Horticultural Sciences (UHS), Bagalkot, Bengaluru Campus, where farmers were exposed to scientific production technologies, improved crop management practices, and recent advancements in ginger cultivation.
The training programme served as an effective platform for promoting scientific horticultural practices and strengthening farmers’ knowledge on advanced and sustainable technologies for improving productivity and profitability in horticulture. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Ramya H. R., Dr. B. Balakrishna and Dr. Atheequlla G. A., ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru.
