Training on “Scientific Mushroom Production and Cultivation Technology” organized at ICAR IIHR CHES, Chettalli on 22 24 July 2026

A three-day hands-on training programme on "Scientific Mushroom Production and Cultivation Technology" was organized by ICAR-IIHR, Central Horticultural Experiment Station (CHES), Chettalli, Kodagu from 22–24 July 2026 under the PM-RKVY project "Rejuvenation of Coorg Mandarin and Establishment of Training Centre on Mushroom and Bee Keeping for Enhancing Farmers Income of Western Ghats, Karnataka Through FPOs and Farmers Participation" (Project Code: 009/S/OXX/GL-409). The inaugural programme was held on 22 July 2026, with Shri Shashidhar H., Deputy Director of Horticulture, Madikeri, as the Chief Guest. On the occasion, Smt. Prema Ganesh, a progressive planter, was felicitated for her achievements and contributions. A total of 25 participants comprising 13 women and 12 men from different parts of Kodagu district attended the training.

The training focused on scientific and entrepreneurial aspects of mushroom cultivation through a combination of classroom lectures and practical demonstrations. Major topics covered included introduction to mushrooms, nutraceutical and medicinal properties of mushrooms, scientific cultivation of oyster mushroom, shiitake mushroom, milky mushroom and king oyster mushroom, spawn handling, substrate preparation, bag filling, spawning, crop management, harvesting, and post-harvest handling, farm hygiene, marketing and value addition of mushroom. Hands-on practical sessions enabled participants to gain firsthand experience in mushroom cultivation techniques. During the programme extension folder on "Scientific Cultivation and Production Technology of Oyster Mushroom" both in Kannada and English were released by Chief Guest and Head I/C.

The valedictory programme was graced by Dr. Ravishankar K.V., Principal Scientist, ICAR-IIHR and RKVY Nodal Officer, as the Chief Guest. Certificates for participation was distributed to all trainees for appreciating their active participation throughout the training programme. To encourage participants to initiate mushroom cultivation, and essential mushroom cultivation inputs were distributed to each trainee, which includes oyster mushroom spawn, mushroom grow bags, hand gloves, face masks, non-absorbent cotton, and rubber bands.

All the technical sessions, comprising both theory and practical demonstrations, were conducted by Dr. C. Chandrashekara, Dr. Chaithra and Dr. Haritha Mohan. The programme successfully enhanced the knowledge and practical skills of the participants and is expected to promote scientific mushroom cultivation as a sustainable income-generating enterprise in the Western Ghats region. Dr. Muralidhara B.M., Sr. Scientist & Head (I/c), CHES, Chettalli, served as the Training Director, while Mrs. Haritha Mohan M., Scientist (Plant Pathology), coordinated the programme as the Training Coordinator.
