ICAR IIHR Sends One Lakh Vegetable Seed Kits to Flood Affected Farmers in Odisha

In a significant initiative to provide immediate livelihood support to farmers affected by floods in Odisha, one lakh vegetable mini seed kits was dispatched for distribution to flood affected farming communities. The initiative is being implemented as a collaborative programme involving ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR0, Bengaluru; the Central Horticultural Experimental Station (CHES), ICAR-IIHR Regional Station, Bhubaneswar, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, Government of Odisha and the Odisha State Seeds Corporation Ltd., Bhubaneswar.
Each mini seed kit contained F1 hybrid seeds of tomato and chilli, along with leafy vegetables amaranthus, palak, and legume vegetables such as yardlong bean or pole dolichos bean. The kits are intended to help flood-affected farmers to quickly resume vegetable cultivation and restore their livelihoods.
The first consignment of seed kits was dispatched in a truck from Bengaluru. The consignment was formally flagged-off by Dr. Tusar Kanti Behera, Director, ICAR–IIHR. The programme was attended by Dr. H.C. Prasanna, Head, Division of Vegetable crops, Dr. E. Srinivas Rao, Principal Scientist, Mr. Ravi Chauhan, CAO (SG), Mr. Jagadeesan, SFAO and other scientists of ICAR-IIHR. The initiative is expected to provide timely agricultural inputs to flood-affected farmers and support the restoration of vegetable production and household livelihoods in the affected areas of Odisha.
